THE LANGHE
The hilly area known as the LANGHE, the home of great wines from time immemorial, lies in the provinces of Cuneo, on the borders with the Roero and Asti districts. The area bounded by the twisting course of the Tanaro, with attractive, ever changing landscapes, is an ideal environment for the practice of its soil and its climate. On the hills of the Lower Langa, in fact, vines are virtually the only form cultivation.
The climate tends to be on the dry side and the vine repays this marked dedication of the environment to its cultivation by providing a higher concentration of sugars in its grapes, and so giving relatively small crops of undisputable quality.
More than 65% of the production, indeed, consists of appellation of controlled and guaranteed origin wines.
Distinguished by their parallel pattern of ridges and valleys, from which, in all probability, the Langhe take their name (Langhe= langues= tongues of land), their historical and geographical centre is Alba, one of the province's leading business and industrial poles, but also the arrival or departure point of the many intineraries embracing the outlying towns, each with its own ancient tower and castle steeped in history, as well as the centre for the production of Piedmont's great wines.
Nobles wines of Alba, Diano D'Alba, Dogliani and the Mondovì Langhe as:
